One of the most presumtuous aspects in the self improvemenent domain is the continual confounding of "depression" as a "feeling," rather than a clinical condition. This confusion leads to very different approaches, and often the stigmatizing of people whose suffering far extends beyond the expression of anger, or the many other "ideas" advice givers feel so free to convey. To be low down, bummed out, fucked up may respond to rallying oneself with intense emotion. But be clear about the difference between being down, and the clinical entity that leads one not to want to improve our selves, but to end them.
